Sega Fantasy VI, One Piece of Crap, and other distractions. [Apr. 13th, 2006|12:48 pm]
UCONN Japanese Animation Society

Since it's the end of the year (practically), I figured it was time to post a few links to distract everyone from things that they should be doing. Some of this has been out there for a year or two but it's worth a second look.. or third, or fourth.

1. Sega Fantasy VI - http://www.dontpressstart.com/pro/SF6/
(Large size version) - http://www.dontpressstart.com/pro/SF6/SF6-2i.swf

This is a FF6 style battle of the game systems between the PSP and...well, everyone else. Funny, but a lot of it went over my head, having never owned most of those systems. Watch for "The Man in Green". Warning: Runtime is around 40 minutes -- even longer than The Demented Cartoon Movie, which I didn't think was even possible! But it is split up into 5-6 parts in case you need to start again in the middle.

2. You probably read VGCats already, but in case you don't I thought this one was kind of funny. http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=145
Also see http://acerbandit.hypermart.net/one_piece_of_crap.swf. Down with horrible dubs!

3. Celebrity Deathmatch: Evangelion's Shinji Ikari versus a piece of wet tissue paper. REALLY NOT WORK SAFE.

(He also wrote one for Darth Vader vs. The Princess Bride's Inigo Montoya, which is even more offensive.)

There, that was several minutes of your life you're not ever getting back. :)

end of year business [Apr. 7th, 2006|01:54 am]
UCONN Japanese Animation Society

[mood |tiredtired]

This is the email I sent out tonight with all the current announcements:
Hi everyone,

We have a couple of very important announcements to make regarding preparation for the end of the year.

First, as many of you know, we are somewhat behind on our series. In order to finish everything up, we voted at this week’s meeting to hold a make-up weekend meeting of 3-4 hours to watch 2 episodes of everything. The decided date is Saturday, April 29 in the afternoon (pending actual room reservation). This is the weekend before finals and after the last official meeting. This means that we will be watching that last 2 episodes of everything except Blood+ (as it is still ongoing). I’m hoping that this will be a good study break for everyone during that final weekend. As additional incentive, next week we will be passing around the collection bucket and gather spare change from those who want to give. With this money and remaining club funds, we will be buying Pocky and Ramune and other snacks for the club to enjoy.

Secondly, elections are coming up as announced this week. Next week (April 14) we will be having nominations for the four officer positions. Anyone who is a current member of the club is eligible to be nominated. The four positions and the responsibility of each are outlined below. On April 21 (two weeks from now), those who are nominated will be given the chance to speak to the club about why they should be elected and other such lovely stuff. Then everyone present will get chance to vote for next year’s officers.

-General Officer Duties-
There are a few things that need to be noted about the officers before going into detailed breakdown of the positions. Officers are required to attend and be present at every meeting. Not only because they might be needed, but because it is important to have everyone involved in the running of the club present. Naturally, exceptions include health issues, exams, and schoolwork. There will also be weekly meetings and work that will need to be done outside of club meeting times.

Here are the descriptions for the officer positions as they stand now
Is in charge of finalizing and approving all decisions for the club, including use of funding and programming. They are also required to sign any paperwork for the club. Basically oversee club operation, delegate responsibility and do miscellaneous tasks like covering for other officer duties.

Their signature is required on all funding forms along with the president’s. They have to attend a money matter’s session every semester and deal closely with the Business Office and USG Funding. There are forms to fill out at various points along the year and other meetings. They also need to keep detailed records of all club money transactions.

Required to work in close conjunction with the president to maintain an active club mailing list. They are also in charge of keep records of club business and oversee/record things like voting for series and officer positions.

-Tech Support-
They work closely with the president to maintain a website for the club. This should be regularly updated. The position requires at least a little knowledge of computers and websites.

I hope that the above descriptions help everyone when thinking about whom to nominate next week and what people might be willing to do. This is a lot to have put in one email and I hope you all have taken the time to read it because there are a lot of important things to know here.

Just a few more thoughts:
The club has a new website now. It can be found at http://uconnjas.googlepages.com/
Also, we need people to start suggesting series for next year. Anything up to 26 episodes long is up for possible viewing.

Thanks and we’ll see you all next week!

MARCH 2 MEETING CANCELED DUE TO SNOW [Mar. 2nd, 2006|12:52 pm]
UCONN Japanese Animation Society

This is the email I just sent to everyone on the email list. Just making sure I get everyone notified!

Hello everyone,

Today is March 3. As I'm sure many of you know, UCONN has canceled classes after 12:30pm. After considering the weather conditions and the safety of our members it has been decided that tonight's scheduled meeting will be canceled as well. Judging by the weather now, it doesn't look like it's going to get any better later and we dont want people driving/ walking on slippery sidewalks just to get the the Student Union. We're well aware that we've missed a couple meetings now so we will be trying to find some way to try and have a makeup meeting or two, perhaps on a weekend during the day.

We have a few other announcements for you all as well. This week's USG funding meeting went well and we can all be happy that we have the money for the projector for the rest of the semester (yay!). Now that we have that out of the way, us officers will be meeting to plan some more events for everyone later in the semester. Thanks for your patience with us during this busy time and hopefully some of you who haven't been coming to meetings lately will come visit us again during this time.

We will be meeting as usual the week after break at the usual time and place. Have wonderful breaks everyone and we look forward to seeing you after!!!

Important Officer Announcement [Jan. 13th, 2006|09:57 pm]
UCONN Japanese Animation Society

[mood |calmcalm]

The following is the email that was sent to everyone on the contact list we made at the beginning of the Fall semester. I'm just adding it to here as well so anyone not on the email list who is on lj can see it too.

To the members of the UCONN Japanese Animation Society,

This email is extremely important for the future of the club and we ask you to please take the time to read it through thoroughly and consider what it contains.

It is with great regret that we have to inform you that Jessica, UCJAS's treasurer has voluntarily stepped down from her position due to personal reasons. This leaves the club without a crucial officer position. As a result, an election for that position will have to be called.

At this point we would like quote the club constitution and its stipulations for officer elections.

I. Elections

A. Elections for the office of president are held when the office becomes vacant

B. Nominations can be made by any member of the UCJAS. Once a nomination is made, it must be seconded by another member. At this point any individual becomes an official candidate for the position of president.

C. Elections will be held at least two weeks in advance. Announcements of elections will be made at meetings of the organization.

D. Elections will run based on a secret ballot. Each member has one vote. Individuals may not vote in an election he/she may be running for.

As noted in point C, it would be usual for elections to be announced at an actual meeting rather than in an email. Additionally, two weeks would be allowed. We draw attention to this so that our members can be fully aware of departure from the constitution. For the sake of making sure that the UCONN Japanese Animation Society can accomplish what we have set out to do, we are proposing to speed up the process slightly. In this case, this email will constitute the first notification. At out first meeting on the first Thursday of the semester we will again make the announcement for elections to be held Thursday, January 26. The election process will be held as outlined by the quoted constitution above.

The office of treasurer is crucial to the workings of the club as you supervise use of all club funds. This requires completing all business office paperwork on time as well as authorizing fund use.

Additionally, we will be holding an election on that same day for the position of Technical Support officer as outlined in the constitution. This position consists of helping with technical setup and adjustment. Additionally, this position will also include helping with maintenance of the club website.

For those of you considering one of these two positions (treasurer and tech support), there will be certain expectations of anyone holding an officer position. For the sake of effective club unity, we ask that all officers be present at all meetings for the entirety of the meeting. Additionally, officers will be meeting once a week to discuss club matters and planning.

We sincerely hope that you have taken the time to read all that and if someone you know is not on this email list, please take a moment to contact them and inform them of the contents of this email. As usual, any comments or concerns can be sent right back to this email address and it will be answered by one of the two remaining officers.

Before the next meeting, a list of possible series to show will be drafted and emailed out for the club membership to look at so that a vote may be taken at the first meeting in addition to the announcement of elections. Thank you very much and we hope to see you all at the first meeting which will be Thursday, January 19 at 9pm in the student union room 303.

Notes for next semester [Dec. 22nd, 2005|06:41 pm]
UCONN Japanese Animation Society

[mood |cheerfulcheerful]
[music |hyponotize ~system of a down]

Hey guys. Just a note for those of you who happen to have this journal friended.

Most importantly, meetings have been moved to THURSDAYS at 9pm in the Student Union. There was a scheduling conflict with Wednesdays for some reason (it's uconn... meh). Please pass this along. I sent an email, but it doesn't hurt to keep remembering.

Also, the site is slowly being updated while I'm on break. And this time, I'm going to keep my promise to do it regularly. *grin* You all see me every week anyway, so feel free to yell at me if I don't..

I hope everyone is having a good vacation and happy new year to all of you.

See you in January!

Yale Anime Society [Sep. 20th, 2005|09:42 pm]
UCONN Japanese Animation Society

OK, here's my shameless plug for Yale Anime Society. Hopefully this isn't a horrible violation of posting rules - if you need me to post it somewhere else I will. Anyways, YAS is the other 'major' club that I know about in the CT area (Wesleyan used to have one, supposedly, but I think it's dead.), and meets Fridays and Saturdays. Friday meetings are sort of like UConn's in that they watch an entire series 5-6 episodes at a time. Saturdays they show movies or the first 3 or so episodes of a series. I know New Haven is a ways from Storrs, but if anyone's really bored on the weekend or will happen to be in the area, feel free to stop by.

Here's the website: http://www.yale.edu/anime It hasn't been updated since May because the webpage person dropped her laptop (oops.), but the Friday showing is currently Evangelion and Saturday they are showing Porco Rosso and some other stuff from Studio Ghibli. E-mail the pres to get on the mailing list, and also check out the forum :)

DirectionsCollapse )

Not sure how likely anyone is to go all that way, but never hurts to ask. Currently, I'm the only person who shows up to both clubs since I work halfway between Storrs and New Haven. :)

-I think there was more... but yeah. I doubt anyone is going to check this anyway. *sigh*
